The way this movie is shot is pure perfection. There is a scene in the movie where everyone was standing and waiting and the day transitioned from day to night simply through Idris Alba’s eyes. It was so good that I watch that scene anytime I have the chance. I don’t know what to tell you about this movie, as you won’t know how good it is until you watch it.
The Fundamentals of Caring
This is one of the blandest and plain dramas I have ever seen. But that actually works for that movie. It might be predictable, But I was so indulged in the characters that I didn’t notice it. It felt like that the whole movie could fall apart at any time but it didn’t. The Fundamentals of Caring is more about the ride rather than the destination. It is true that it was predictable and all the cool kids on reddit will tell you how bad it is. But it is not. Sometimes all you need is bland story executed amazingly. And this is that movie. Bonus points for having Paul Rudd as the main lead. Who makes everything better.
Marriage Story
I mean, the movie was nominated for the Oscars. What else do you want me to say? It is one of the most honest portrayals of marriage life on rails. Noah Baumbach has a weird way to make movies and inserting few scenes of absolute comedy was that way. Another brilliant decision by Noah was to show Charlie’s story and narrate Nicole’s. It was because of who they are and what they do. Charlie is a director and that’s why we got to see his part, Nicole is an actress and that is why we got to hear her part. I am not saying that this movie is perfect. But, when the positives outweigh the negative in such away. The possibilities of complaining become very less. It is by far one of the best dramas on Netflix.
Mudbound
Another Oscar nominated movie. I just had to add this because of how visually pleasing this movie really is. This might be my favorite was movie alongside Dunkirk and 1917. The story is beautiful, enraging, frustrating all at the same time. And the way it is shot, Chef’s kiss. I guess that is why it was nominated for the Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and The 10 Best Original Films on Netflix. Another nomination was for the Best supporting actress for Mary J. Blige and honestly, I thought she should have won it. It is a story of love, racial discrimination and survival. The fact that this movie is still relatable after so many years really hurts, and the dialogues!! They really hit all the emotional spots.
Okja
It is one of the best satire I have ever watched. It is an absolute beautiful movie that all of you should watch. The movie was so much fun but with something depressing present their every time. It is called balancing guys. I just wish that it was released in theaters, because my TV screen was small to catch all the brilliance this movie had. Another thing I liked about the movie was the raw portrayal of slaughterhouses. They didn’t tried to hide the reality in any way to it more family friendly movie. It just shows that when Netflix are taking risks they are one of the best production houses. It is definitely one of the best Netflix originals movies that you should watch, no matter what.
Bright
I absolutely loves this movie. It is so abysmal and so chaotic that it makes all the sense in the world. It might not be the best movie you will ever watch. But it surely is one of the most unique movie you will ever see. I was really excited for second part, until that was taken away from me. The main thing is that you will be completely entertained for two-hours. There are scenes of pure comedy, emotions and action is just cherry on the top. Will Smith and Joel Edgerton really carried the movie on their back and gave one hell of performances. It is the type of movie that you should watch just because of the concept.
Dolemite Is My Name
It is the latest movie on the list. 2019 was really great for the movies. Honestly, I watched this movie because of peer pressure, and I am glad I watched it. The best punchline of the movie comes during credit when it says “Based on a true story”. It might not be making much sense, that is because you have to watch it for yourself. The movie will actually start after 15 minutes and will never look back from there. It will make you laugh throughout. Dolemite Is My Name is such an unusual comedy movie from Netflix that I love it. This movie could have released on any platform and would have killed it anyway. Definitely one of the best movies on Netflix right now.
Roma
Finally, A Netflix original that won the Oscar. The way Roma captures the Mexican culture so honestly and presents it to us in a poetic way. It is one of the most authentic and raw movies I have ever seen. You can leave me in a room with Roma for a month and I won’t be bored. As I will find new things to gasp on every time I will watch it. It is one of the best drama movies on Netflix right now. And if you haven’t watched it yet, you definitely should. The Black and White makes the movie so much better than it already was. Go and watch this movie now and then thank me.
Tallulah
Tallulah is an Indie darling and it has all the rights to be. It is well written, execution is almost perfect, Elliot Page did an amazing job, and the way it was shot was pure beauty. The thing that surprised me was Allison Janney and her chemistry with Elliot Page. Both of them were brilliant and carried the movie throughout. The ending might leave a bitter-sweet taste in your mouth but it was the only way. Just go and watch it. Watch all the movies on this list.
