The recent debuts of Adam Sandler’s Hustle on Netflix and Adam McKay’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on HBO show that the sports genre in movies and television is still very much alive and strong. Similar to other film genres, sports movies frequently adhere to a set formula. The fact that so many of the stories in this genre are based on real occurrences makes them popular with readers. 1. Coach Carter (2005)

Director- Thomas Carter
In a struggling Richmond, California neighbourhood, Ken Carter assumes the position of basketball coach at his former high school in 1999. Carter is appalled by both his players’ bad attitudes and their dreadful play, and he sets out to rectify both. His rigorous rules, which include a dress code, good grades, and courteous behaviour, are exemplified by written contracts. Jim Morris is the baseball coach and chemistry instructor at the high school in Texas. His players are inspired by his promise to attend a professional tryout if they win the title. As he has always enjoyed baseball. He had dreamed of being a professional baseball player, but an injury put an end to that. Unexpectedly, the 39-year-old father of three shows up to a Tampa Bay Devil Rays training camp with a 98 mph fastball seemingly coming naturally to him. He has a contract, works in the lower leagues, and his devoted wife stays at home to raise their kids. He is quickly promoted to the major league club and is pitching for Tampa Bay against the Rangers in Texas.
3. The Blind Side (2009)

Based on the real-life incident of Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy. She took in Michael Oher, an African-American teen who was homeless. In addition to his mother being a heroin addict, Michael has no idea who his father is. Michael has not received much formal schooling and lacked many learning tools. However, Leigh Anne quickly assumes control in line with who she is. Hence, making sure the young man has every chance to succeed. She makes a big effort to assist him when he exhibits interest in football. Even offering the coach some suggestions on how to exploit Michael’s talents to the best advantage.
In addition to giving him a caring home, they also pay a tutor to work with him. Until his grades are good enough for him to be eligible for an NCAA Division I athletic scholarship. In the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens selected Michael Oher.
4. Cinderella Man (2005)

Director- Ron Howard
James J. Braddock, a former professional boxer, loses all he owns and all of his savings when the stock market crashes during the Great Depression. Because they are a loving family, he and his wife Mae Braddock, their three children, and their everyday struggles are all endured. When James’ manager and coach Joe Gould gives him the opportunity to return to boxing in 1934, he transforms into the personification of hope for the forlorn citizens of a destroyed country.
5. A League Of Their Own (1992)

Women occupied the majority of the positions that were left empty during World War II because all the men were serving in the military. As scouts are deployed all over the nation to discover female players, baseball team owners decide to build teams with women because they do not want the sport to become extinct permanently. One of the scouts is travelling through Oregon when she comes across the amazing Dottie Hinson. She declines his invitation to try out, but her sister Kit, who has been itching to leave Oregon, offers to go with him. He accepts, but only if she can persuade her sister to accompany them.
They are put together on the same team after trying out. The squad manager is former player and current alcoholic Jimmy Dugan. He doesn’t feel like it’s a real job, though, so he drinks and isn’t exactly doing it, which is why Dottie takes over. Until Dottie does something that attracts notice, the league is in danger of being shut down after a few months when it seems the females are not attracting any attention. Kit soon feels that she is living in Dottie’s shadow as the team’s star.
6. Friday Night Lights (2004)

Director- Peter Berg
The 1988 football squad at Permian “MOJO” High School in Odessa, Texas, is expected to perform well. Odessa is a blue-collar town with a passionate football following. Coach Gaines is made aware by the community in a variety of not-so-subtle ways that anything less than a state championship would be considered a failure by MOJO, a long-time powerhouse in Texas high school football. However, hopes seem crushed when the team loses its star tailback in the first game of the year, and MOJO enters into a downward spiral right away. The team is left for dead, and everyone is prepared to execute coach Gaines by hanging him in effigy. Nevertheless, by some miracle, MOJO’s coach Gaines unites the group, and the squad makes an earlier-unlikely run for the state playoffs.
7. The Fighter (2010)

Director- David O. Russell
Former boxer Dicky Eklund, who once faced Sugar Ray Leonard, thinks a television team is shooting his comeback in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1993. In reality, it is a documentary on Eklund’s journey into heroin addiction as a 40-year-old. Younger half-brother Micky Ward is currently the family’s best chance to win a boxing world championship, but Dicky and mother Alice appear to believe they have something to gain from Micky. His fiancée and father think he should get rid of them and hire a professional management and trainer, but when Micky starts to get the fights that matter, Dicky’s counsel is what gets him there, bringing them all together as Micky wins the world title.
8. Moneyball (2011)

Director- Bennett Miller
The Oakland A’s of general manager Billy Beane in 2001 suffered a postseason loss to the Yankees and subsequently lost three stars to free agency. With the A’s player salary being less than one-third of those of wealthy teams, how is Beane able to produce a competitive team? Beane employs and listens to Peter Brand, a recent Yale graduate who evaluates players using Bill James’ statistical methodology, much to the dismay of his scouts. On paper, Beane puts together a team of unknown players that can reach base and score runs. The players won’t then be used in the manner that Art Howe, Beane’s manager, desires.
9. Hoosiers (1986)

Director- David Anspaugh
A temperamental coach and a former star player who become an alcoholic lead a small-town basketball team on an unlikely journey to the Indiana high school championship game in this timeless tale of redemption. Coach Norman Dale faces a number of challenges along the way, including an obstinate instructor determined to prevent the best player from joining the squad, a town full of sceptical fathers, and a group of athletes that lack discipline. Story was inspired by the 1954 Indiana State Championship won by the Milan Indians.
10. Remember The Titans (2000)

Director- Boaz Yakin
T.C. Williams High School was formed in Alexandria, Virginia in the early 1970s when two schools merged. A black American coach from North Carolina will take over as the Titans’ head coach in place of the current European American. When football players of various races are forced to play on the same squad, tensions develop. During the two-week training camp near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, many of these tensions are reduced. The city of Alexandria was in upheaval when the players arrived back there as a result of the high school’s forced desegregation. The community came to embrace the modifications as the season went on because of the team’s success. The Titans and the city were more entwined than ever following their undefeated season.
