I am so grateful to Netflix for suggesting this movie to me. One of the very few movies that gets the concept of vampires right. It is a well-made movie that will leave you scarred for some time.
The movie is cold for the significant part, but simultaneously it shows us so many character driven emotional plots. This movie is terrifying, but at the same time it is warm and will affect you emotionally.
Hereditary
Heriditary is one of a kind movie. Many horror movies will affect you psychologically, but very few will leave you unsettled. Hereditary is the latter kind of horror movie. A movie that will force you to sleep with your lights on.
The screenplay of this movie deals with the topics of mental illness, grief and trauma, and it is done beautifully. The cinematography is truly scary, and some scenes are just outright disturbing. Definitely one of the top horror movies of all time.
Midsommar
I went in completely blind to watch this movie and am glad I did that. Many people will say this movie lacks emotional depth, but they are wrong. Midsommar has everything that makes it one of the top horror movies.
Midsommar is not your typical horror movie. There are lots of jumpscares and cheap use of blood. But it is unsettling. Florence Pugh carried the movies on her back and made it work. That soundtrack might be one of the scariest thing I have ever heard.
The Exorcist
I used to get nightmares of this movie in my childhood. That doll still scares me in my dreams, which is not an overstatement. Let say that ‘The Exorcist’ was way ahead of its time in 1973.
Even now, you will see how beautifully they integrated the sets and location in the screenplay. Everything was believable and gross and will become the cause of your nightmares.
Insidious
Insidious is my all time favorite horror franchise, and it is not even close. The franchise might have become outlandish with each part, but it still has charm. But we are here to talk about the first one.
Rose Byrne does not get the credit she deserves. Her expressions alone makes this movie ten time scarier. Till this date, Insidious has the best jump scare scene of all time, and you can’t argue about that.
The Invitaion
I am not talking about the movie that came out in 2015. This is one of the most underrated horror movies of all time. No one mentions this movie, and that is criminal. It is one of the top horror movies of all time.
It is a slow burner, precisely the kind of movies I prefer. Yes, you must stick with the movie and handle the slow pace. But the subtle tensions about trauma, paranoia and suspicion makes everything worth it.
The Grudge
I watched all three Grudge movies in one sitting and could not leave the room at night. Let me say that The Grudge is a work of art in terms of horror movies. I still have to catch the 2020 one, so we will see about that.
But the first three parts are must watch. No matter how often you watch it, it will always scare you. The way this movie slowly reveals everything and give you glimpse of something with that terrifying music is spine chilling.
What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?
I have never seen a psychological horror that is scarier than this movie. There is no jump scare, no blood, no ghost, just psychological aspect that will terrify you for the rest of your life.
Truly a classic. Davis gave one of her best performances. She should have won the Oscar that year. By the end of the movie you won’t see any villain. It is an immense tragedy, precisely what a must-watch top horror movie is.
Orphan
It is such a complicated watch. The First Kill was even better than the first part. Both of these parts are hard to watch. And when you realize that the movie is based and might have inspired a similar crime, this movie becomes so much more terrifying.
Isabelle Fuhrman performed of a lifetime. It is such a disturbing movie that I had to pause it alsmot ten times. It is a sick movie, precisely what the creators wanted it to be. Give this a watch, and you won’t ever forget it.
